As a veteran fan of Lights, I have experienced this artist change and grow and by far the recent releases, visuals and promotional material for PEP are knocking me down in absolute awe. LIGHTS has transformed herself into a bigger, bolder brighter ethereal being. I thought the Prodigal Daughter & Baby I'm Back tour was genius into reintroducing herself and the album to prepare us as fans of what is coming. PEP is a follow-on album from 2017's Skin & Earth inspiring a new comic series called "The Clinic" an interactive side story written and drawn by Lights herself. Hearing the Prodigal Daughter for the first time back in Mid-October 2021. I got immediate bad-bitch vibes, the music video knocked me out, I did not expect this women to be so bold and confident, I am proud of her for stepping out into this territory as it screams feminism in the right ways and we are here for it! The colour scheme screams "I want to be playful and have fun and be me!" For a time Prodigal Daughter, gave me inspiration, made me stronger and became my anthem of motivation.
"We go together like Salt and Vinegar..."
An now with the release of Salt and Vinegar, there is quite a self-righteous attitude and self-reflection to give oneself a pep-talk, which focuses on relevant themes of self-growth and as a fan is something we can easily relate to and something we need to apply to an aspect of our lives, or at least what I can say for myself. This track feels like a mental check to yourself and I love how it feels slightly aggressive and stern to the toxic inner voice.
The guitars are Light and bouncy. Lights vocals provides the attitude and sharpness, whilst the bass guitar swaggers along side of her melodies, the drums keep things static and together with a steady beat.
Coming back to visuals, the music video portrays Lights grabbing confectionery from a vending machine dressed to the nines in overly prestigious fealthered jacket and yellow heels, then being absorbed into the vending machine, the colour scheme yellow with red and blue accents are the brightest I have seen in a music video Lights has produced, it goes really well with her over all concept, becoming an in-vending machine comericial. "We're all products, we all market ourselves every single day," Lights said in a statement. "The idea behind PEP is if you're going to brand yourself, then brand yourself to happiness."
The products in the vending machine will be coming soon to the merch store!
The entirety of the concept, merchandise and interlinked comic series, once again has me excited and grasping at every release and promotional detail, making me want more, I am definitely on the list for the pre-release and pre-order!
